Backlit Stretch Ceiling FAQs

What depth do I need between the LEDs and stretch diffuser for a backlit ceiling?

Ideally, the depth between the LEDs and the translucent stretch ceiling should be at least 200mm to give the best balance of a fantastic evenly illuminated ceiling and value for money. We can install the LEDs closer to the stretch ceiling, but the smaller the void, the more LEDs are required (which adds to the cost) . Check out our technical page for example fixing details.

What needs to be in place for us to install a backlit stretch ceiling?

We will need to fix our track profiles to a finished perimeter structure and our LED boards up to a boarded soffit. The main contractor/client will need to create a recessed plasterboard structure with at least 9mm ply or MDF within to provide a rigid and continuous structure to which we can screw fix our perimeter profiles. Please refer to our technical page for typical fixing details and drawings, or contact us for more information.

How many LEDs will I need above the stretch ceiling?

This will depend on the depth available between the stretch ceiling material and the soffit. The smaller the depth, the more LEDs will be required in order to achieve an even illumination without shadowing, as the LEDs will be closer to the stretch material. We can help you with this if you are using your own lighting, or we can provide the lighting for you so you have one less thing to worry about!

How do we avoid insects and debris falling on the stretch material?

We can install a second ‘barrier’ layer between the LEDs and the stretch diffuser which can collect any insects and dust so that it doesn’t show up on the lower diffuser. This is a commonly chosen option for backlit stretch ceilings.
