How does it work?

The stretch ceiling panel is custom-made. It is slightly smaller than the room or opening size. The panel is heated with propane space heaters. Then, it is stretched into a fixed track around the perimeter. The installation process is very quick with minimal site mess and wastage. Stretch ceilings are a flexible and cleaner option. They are also highly sustainable and eco-friendly. These ceilings can replace plasterboard or tile systems. You can find them in a wide range of finishes.

What is a
Stretch Ceiling?

A stretch ceiling is a type of suspended ceiling system consisting of two basic components – a perimeter track and lightweight PVC fabric membrane which stretches and clips into the track.

In addition to ceilings the system can be used on walls, as a light diffuser, floating panels, exhibitions and creative shapes.

Customise Your Finish

The versatility of a stretch ceiling lies in its texture. We offer four primary finishes to suit any architectural style:

  • Gloss/Mirror: Reflects light and makes rooms with low ceilings feel significantly taller. This finish creates a striking, modern look by doubling the visual space of any interior.
  • Matt: Provides the look of perfectly flat, high-end plasterwork. It is the ideal choice for those who want the appearance of a "perfect ceiling" without the risk of cracks or peeling.
  • Satin: A middle ground that offers a soft, pearlescent glow without being a full mirror. It diffuses light beautifully for a sophisticated, subtle sheen.
  • Translucent: Specifically designed to be used for entire glowing ceilings or "sky" effects. When paired with our LED systems, the ceiling itself becomes the light source.

The Imperial Advantage: Hot & Cold Installation Systems

The Imperial Advantage: Hot & Cold Installation Systems

At Imperial, we don't believe in a "one size fits all" approach. We are one of the few UK specialists with the expertise to supply and install both Hot-Stretch (PVC) and Cold-Stretch (Fabric) systems.

Whether you require the 100% waterproof durability of a hot-installed PVC membrane for a swimming pool, or the superior acoustic performance and seamless matte finish of a cold-installed fabric for a home cinema, we provide the right solution for your environment.

  • Hot-Stretch (PVC): Ideal for moisture resistance, high-gloss finishes, and vapour barriers.
  • Cold-Stretch (Fabric): The premium choice for acoustics, integrated lighting, and eco-friendly, non-PVC requirements.

Not sure which system is right for your project? Read our detailed guide on Hot vs Cold Installation Methods here.

Fabric Stretch Ceiling vs PVC: Choosing the Right System for Your Project

Not all stretch ceilings are the same, and the right choice depends entirely on the environment and the finish you need. At Imperial, we supply and install both fabric stretch ceiling systems and PVC stretch ceiling membranes, giving us the flexibility to specify the best solution for each project.

A fabric stretch ceiling uses a cold-stretch installation process, making it the preferred choice for spaces where a premium acoustic finish, a seamless matt surface, or an eco-friendly non-PVC solution is specified. The material is lightweight, fire-rated to B-s1,d0, and particularly well-suited to high-end residential interiors, home cinemas, commercial offices, and museum or gallery environments.

A PVC stretch ceiling is installed using our hot-stretch system, is the technically correct choice wherever moisture resistance is essential. The material is 100% waterproof, fully impermeable, and acts as a vapour barrier — which is why it is the standard specification for swimming pool ceilings, wet rooms, and spa environments.

Both systems are available across our full range of finishes — matt, satin, gloss, and translucent — and both carry our 10-year guarantee. If you are unsure which system is right for your project, our team is happy to advise.

F.A.Q.

A stretch ceiling is a suspended ceiling system consisting of two basic components – a perimeter track and lightweight PVC fabric membrane which stretches and clips into the track. In addition to ceilings the system can be used on walls, as a light diffuser, floating panels, exhibitions and creative shapes.

Stretch ceilings have a very long shelf life, as long as they don’t get damaged. Here at Imperial, we guarantee 10 years as a minimum, but there have been stretch ceilings that managed to power through for over twenty years!

Yes! The stretch ceiling can be unclipped to give access above and then reinstalled using specialist tools once the works above are complete.

It depends on the location of any damage within the ceiling panel. If it is near to the edge, the ceiling can often be re-harpooned and re-stretched; if not, a replacement will be required.

Stretch ceilings are often specified for pool environments as they act as a vapour barrier but also because they are low maintenance, will not require redecoration, and they look fantastic!

Absolutely! We can create apertures in stretch ceilings to allow for downlights, speakers, grills, smoke heads, etc. They just need to be self-supported. Pretty much anything that you can have in a plasterboard ceiling, you can also have in a stretch ceiling.

Most stretch ceilings will have either a sideward or upwards fixing profile at the perimeter and possibly a joining profile for larger panels to be connected. The profiles will require a rigid and continuous structure to fix into. Visit our technical page for example fixing details.

Our stretch ceiling material is fire rated to BS1D0. This means that in the event of a fire, the material will not drip or contribute to the spread of flame. You can find more information on our technical page.

Once the fixing profiles are in place, the pre-made stretch ceiling is heated using propane space heaters (up to 38ºC), stretched, and clipped into the perimeter profiles using specialist fitting tools.

There are several factors that impact the cost of stretch ceiling installation including size, complexity of design, different shapes, required cut-outs, and especially if lighting is involved. It’s always best to contact us for a free estimate.
