Stretch Ceiling Installation Specialists : From High-End Residential to Commercial Fit-Outs
How Stretch Ceiling Installation Works - From Survey to Fit?
Every stretch ceiling panel is custom-made to the exact dimensions of your space, manufactured slightly smaller than the room size to ensure a perfect, tensioned finish once installed. For PVC systems, the panel is heated using propane space heaters before being stretched and clipped into a fixed perimeter track around the room. The entire process is fast, clean and dry, most installations complete in a single day with minimal site mess, no wet trades and zero wastage.
Stretch ceilings are a genuinely flexible solution, suitable for new builds, refurbishments and complex commercial fit-outs alike. The systems are lightweight, highly sustainable and eco-friendly, and offer a permanent alternative to plasterboard or tile ceilings that will never crack, sag or require repainting. Available in a wide range of finishes including gloss, matt, satin and translucent, every installation is tailored to the project environment and design brief.
Choosing the Right System for Your Project
A stretch ceiling is a type of suspended ceiling system consisting of two basic components – a perimeter track and lightweight PVC fabric membrane which stretches and clips into the track.
In addition to ceilings the system can be used on walls, as a light diffuser, floating panels, exhibitions and creative shapes.
Customise Your Finish
The versatility of a stretch ceiling lies in its texture. We offer four primary finishes to suit any architectural style:
- Gloss/Mirror: Reflects light and makes rooms with low ceilings feel significantly taller. This finish creates a striking, modern look by doubling the visual space of any interior.
- Matt: Provides the look of perfectly flat, high-end plasterwork. It is the ideal choice for those who want the appearance of a "perfect ceiling" without the risk of cracks or peeling.
- Satin: A middle ground that offers a soft, pearlescent glow without being a full mirror. It diffuses light beautifully for a sophisticated, subtle sheen.
- Translucent: Specifically designed to be used for entire glowing ceilings or "sky" effects. When paired with our LED systems, the ceiling itself becomes the light source.

The Imperial Advantage: Hot & Cold Installation Systems
At Imperial, we don't believe in a "one size fits all" approach. We are one of the few UK specialists with the expertise to supply and install both Hot-Stretch (PVC) and Cold-Stretch (Fabric) systems.
Whether you require the 100% waterproof durability of a hot-installed PVC membrane for a swimming pool, or the superior acoustic performance and seamless matte finish of a cold-installed fabric, we provide the right solution for your environment.
- Hot-Stretch (PVC): Ideal for moisture resistance, high-gloss finishes, vapour barriers, and large format backlit ceilings.
- Cold-Stretch (Fabric): The premium choice for acoustics, and eco-friendly, non-PVC requirements.

Fabric Stretch vs PVC Membranes
Not all stretch ceilings are the same, and the right choice depends entirely on the environment and the finish you need. At Imperial, we supply and install both fabric stretch ceiling systems and PVC stretch ceiling membranes, giving us the flexibility to specify the best solution for each project.
A PVC stretch ceiling is installed using our hot-stretch system, and can cover large ceiling areas up to 50 sq m without joins. Perfect for commercial and residential projects, this is the most commonly used stretch ceiling system and also the technically correct choice wherever moisture resistance is essential. The material is 100% waterproof, fully impermeable, and acts as a vapour barrier - which is why it is the standard specification for swimming pool ceilings, wet rooms, and spa environments.
A fabric stretch ceiling uses a cold-stretch installation process, making it the preferred choice for smaller spaces where a premium acoustic finish, a seamless matt surface, or an eco-friendly non-PVC solution is required. The material is lightweight, fire-rated to B-s1,d0, and particularly well-suited to high-end residential interiors, commercial offices, and lightbox applications.
Both material types are fire rated and carry our 10-year guarantee. If you are unsure which system is right for your project, our team is happy to advise.

Built for Compliance: CSCS-Qualified & UK Nationwide Delivery
When choosing a stretch ceiling installer, the quality of the installation is just as important as the quality of the material. Every stretch ceiling we fit is installed by CSCS-qualified operatives, meaning we can work safely and compliantly on both commercial construction sites and private residential projects across the UK.
As specialists, our installation team works exclusively with stretch ceiling systems. Our fitters are experienced in handling both hot and cold-stretch methods, working with complex geometries, multi-panel installations, and integrated lighting configurations that require precision alignment and careful co-ordination with other trades.
We cover projects from our base in Wokingham, Berkshire, and regularly install stretch ceilings throughout London, the South East, and across the UK. For larger or more remote projects, we provide competitive travel and accommodation pricing — contact us for a full quote.

F.A.Q.
Why are stretch ceilings recommended for swimming pools?
Stretch ceilings are often specified for pool environments as they act as a vapour barrier but also because they are low maintenance, will not require redecoration, and they look fantastic!
What is a backlit stretch ceiling?
It's a stretched, translucent membrane fitted over LED lighting, so you get a ceiling that glows evenly with no visible fittings. Imperial's system, StretchLume, is built specifically for this. The LED layout, membrane and fixing profile are all worked out together, rather than just shining light through a basic diffuser panel.
Does it create hotspots or shadows?
No. The whole point of the system is even, shadow free light across the surface, whether that's a small 2m² display niche or a 50m² lobby ceiling.
What guarantee comes with a pool ceiling installation?
Every pool ceiling Imperial installs is backed by a 10-year guarantee, covering the membrane against degradation from chlorine, humidity and UV exposure.
Can we get access above the stretch ceiling once it has been installed?
Yes! The stretch ceiling can be unclipped to give access above and then reinstalled using specialist tools once the works above are complete.
How much maintenance does a pool ceiling need?
None beyond wiping down it won't crack, peel, or need repainting/grout replacement like plaster or tile.
How long do the LEDs last, and is there a warranty?
Imperial fits 24V LEDs and power supplies with a 5 year guarantee, and once it's installed it needs very little maintenance.
Is a pool ceiling installation fire-rated?
Yes, every pool ceiling installation is fire-rated to B-s1,d0.
Can stretch ceilings be repaired?
It depends on the location of any damage within the ceiling panel. If it is near to the edge, the ceiling can often be re-harpooned and re-stretched; if not, a replacement will be required.
Is a PVC pool ceiling actually waterproof?
Yes. The membrane is completely impermeable. If a pipe above the ceiling develops a leak, the PVC ceiling contains the water and allows it to be safely drained without damage to the room below.
Can I have downlights and speakers within my stretch ceiling?
Absolutely! We can create apertures in stretch ceilings to allow for downlights, speakers, grills, smoke heads, etc. They just need to be self-supported. Pretty much anything that you can have in a plasterboard ceiling, you can also have in a stretch ceiling.
Is it fire rated and safe for commercial use?
Yes, StretchLume is fire rated, so it's suitable for commercial, retail and architectural spaces.
What installation methods are available?
There are three. Flush mount, which sits within a plasterboard opening for a clean, level finish. Surface mount, which works well when there's limited depth or an exposed structural slab. And suspended (or "floating"), which creates dramatic light raft zones in open plan spaces.
How much does it cost to install a stretch ceiling?
There are several factors that impact the cost of stretch ceiling installation including size, complexity of design, different shapes, required cut-outs, and especially if lighting is involved. It’s always best to contact us for a free estimate.
Does chlorine or chemical exposure damage the ceiling over time?
No. PVC is unaffected by the chemical atmosphere of indoor swimming pools and will not degrade, discolour over time.
What lighting can be integrated into a pool ceiling?
Waterproof downlights, LED strip perimeter lighting, and fibre optic star effects can all be incorporated during manufacture.
Are your installers accredited for commercial pool projects?
Yes - CHAS, SafeContractor and SSIP-accredited, and SPATA members.
Can a star ceiling be controlled or integrated with smart home systems?
Yes, the light sources work with most current/new control systems via standard DMX interface, or a simple remote control for straightforward operation.
Are star ceilings energy-efficient?
Yes, they are a sustainable, energy-efficient lighting source.
Why do standard ceilings fail in swimming pool environments?
Standard ceilings are prone to moisture and mould damage in high-humidity pool environments; PVC stretch ceilings are engineered to perform where standard ceilings fail.
How does a stretch ceiling protect the building structure above a pool?
It acts as a vapour barrier when correctly installed and sealed, it prevents moisture-laden air reaching the structural roof and walls, protecting the building envelope.
Can I choose the colour of the star ceiling?
Yes, available in White for a classic effect or RGBW for colour-changing ambience.
Can you control the colour or brightness?
Yes. Depending on the LED chosen (single white, Tunable, RGBW), you can dim up and down and cycle through colours and colour temperatures, and it integrates seamlessly with all popular control methods (DALI, DMX, 0-10v, PWM, etc).
Does it work for retrofits, or only new builds?
Both. It's designed to suit new build projects as well as retrofits.
How long does installation take?
Installation times vary depending on the size and complexity of the project. Smaller installations (up to 10-15 sq m) can often be completed within a day, typical star ceilings generally take 2-3 days, while larger or more complex projects may take several days or weeks. We will always confirm the expected programme before work begins and coordinate with your project schedule.
Is it safe to have electrical wiring near a swimming pool or steam room ceiling?
No mains electricity is present at the ceiling – for star ceilings the fibre optic strands carry light only, from a single LED source unit located away from the wet zone. There is no heat or live current at the ceiling surface, which is why it's compliant for pool halls and steam rooms.
How many stars/points can be fitted, and can I choose the pattern?
On most star ceilings we install approx. 25 ‘star’ points per square metre, but this can be increased or decreased depending on the preferred star density. We will work with you to achieve your design, including bespoke patterns or constellations if required.
What kinds of spaces is it used in?
It's popular in hospitality and leisure (spas, hotel lobbies, restaurants), retail and brand spaces, healthcare and wellness settings where adjustable white light helps create a calming feel, commercial offices, and it's a particular favourite for car showrooms and photo studios.
Can architects get the technical specs?
Yes, StretchLume is on NBS Source, and there's an Architect Pack with technical drawings and LED layout guidance, plus a product data sheet, both available to download.
Is it a full supply and install service?
Yes, Imperial handles the whole thing themselves, from the LED layout design right through to fitting the LED and tensioning the membrane on site.
How is a fibre optic star ceiling made?
A high-quality LED light source, top-grade fibre optic cable, and a custom-made stretch fabric ceiling, combined to create a night-sky effect.
Is installation disruptive, and can it go into an existing room?
Easy retrofit, quick to install, not a disruptive or messy construction phase.
Are star ceilings energy-efficient?
Yes, and a sustainable, energy-efficient lighting source.
