When planning a renovation, most people assume all stretch ceilings are the same. In reality, there are two distinct systems: Hot-Stretch (PVC) and Cold-Stretch (Fabric). At Imperial, we have the expertise in both hot and cold fittings, to ensure you get the right material for the right environment.
The Comparison: PVC vs. Fabric
| Feature | PVC Membrane (Hot Install) | Fabric / Textile (Cold Install) |
| Install Method | Heated to ~60°C | Room Temperature (Cold) |
| Edge Detail | Harpoon / Pre-welded | Silicone / Push-in edge |
| Colour Range | Gloss, Satin, Matte | Mainly White & Blacks |
| Maintenance | Easy to wipe clean | Hard to clean / May need replacement |
| Price Point | Similar to Fabric | Similar to PVC |
| Environmental | Recyclable | Non-PVC / Eco-friendly |
PVC Stretch Ceilings (The Hot Install)
PVC is often the "all-rounder" of the industry. During installation, we heat the room to make the membrane pliable, allowing it to be stretched and locked into place.
- Design Flexibility: PVC offers a massive range of colors and finishes. Whether you want a vibrant hue or a high-gloss mirror effect, PVC is the go-to choice.
- Easier Maintenance: PVC is much easier to keep clean and install overall. Its non-porous surface can be wiped down, making it perfect for kitchens or high-traffic areas.
- Waterproof Protection: Ideally suited for swimming pools or bathrooms. If a leak occurs above the ceiling, the PVC can be drained and reset.
Fabric Stretch Ceilings (The Cold Install)
Fabric is a non-PVC, polyester-based material installed at room temperature. It is specifically favored for high-end architectural finishes and acoustic performance.
- The Installation Process: Unlike PVC, fabric uses a silicone or push-in edge. During the install, the material is tucked into the track, and the fitter must manually trim the excess fabric around the perimeter to achieve a clean finish.
- Lighting & Acoustics: Fabric is the gold standard for integrated lighting. Because the color range is primarily limited to whites and blacks, it is designed to work perfectly with backlighting to create "glowing" ceilings without hotspots.
- Environmental: For clients looking for a sustainable, PVC-free option, fabric is the better environmental choice.
- The Risk Factor: It is important to note that fabric is less "forgiving" than PVC. It is harder to clean, and if there is a significant issue or damage to the material, you cannot simply "reset" it—the entire ceiling must be re-installed.
Why the Imperial Expertise Matters
Not all companies can work with both hot and cold stretch systems. It requires different tools, training, and a deep understanding of material tension.
By choosing Imperial, you aren't being sold "what we have"—you are being sold what you need. We provide the waterproof durability of PVC where moisture is a factor, and the sophisticated, eco-friendly finish of fabric where acoustics and lighting are the priority.
Best of all? The price point to the user is virtually the same. You don't have to compromise on quality based on your budget; you only have to choose the material that fits your space.
