Backlit Stretch Ceiling Systems: Supply & Installation | StretchLume by Imperial

StretchLume: Backlit Stretch Ceiling Systems for Architectural & Commercial Spaces
Precision-engineered backlit stretch ceiling systems delivering consistent, shadow-free illumination
Imperial Stretch Ceilings specialise in the design, supply, and installation of StretchLume luminous backlit ceiling systems, combining high-performance LED backlighting with translucent stretch membranes to create evenly illuminated ceiling surfaces with uniform, shadow-free light.
Illuminated Stretch Ceiling Systems: Perfect Light from Surface to Surface
Whether specified as an illuminated stretch ceiling, a backlit ceiling panel, or a stretched ceiling light surface, the principle is the same: LED light sources positioned behind a tensioned translucent membrane create an evenly lit surface with no hotspots and no shadows.
The StretchLume system is our engineered approach to this type of installation. Unlike systems that simply shine light through a basic diffuser, StretchLume is designed from the outset for architectural precision — with LED layout, membrane specification, and fixing profile all optimised together to deliver a consistent result across any size or shape of ceiling.
The result is a backlit stretch ceiling that looks just as impressive in a 2m² product display niche as it does across a 50m² hotel lobby ceiling. Consistent, controllable, and clean — with minimal maintenance required once installed.

What is StretchLume?
StretchLume is our proprietary luminous ceiling system, designed to deliver consistent, high-quality illumination using stretch membrane technology and precision LED backlighting.
By combining a tensioned translucent membrane with ISC LED lighting, the system creates seamless illuminated ceiling surfaces with no visible hotspots, making it ideal for both architectural ceilings and feature lighting installations.
Designed for both new build and retrofit applications.

Retail & Brand Environments: Providing uniform, shadow-free lighting that enhances product colours and draws customer attention.
Healthcare & Wellness: Utilising adjustable white light in treatment rooms to improve patient comfort and create a calming atmosphere.
Commercial Offices: Transforming boardroom environments with sleek, minimalist light surfaces that replace traditional, bulky fixtures.
Each installation is individually specified and quoted. Contact us to discuss your project or download our architect pack for full technical drawings and LED layout guidance.
Versatile Installation Configurations
To ensure we can meet the unique structural requirements of any project, we offer three primary installation methods for the StretchLume system:
- Flush-Mounted: Installed within a plasterboard ceiling opening for a minimalist, level aesthetic.
- Surface-Mounted: The ideal solution for projects with limited depth or exposed structural slabs.
- Suspended (Floating): Create dramatic architectural 'light rafts' to define specific zones in open-plan spaces.
To provide total customisation, we offer a range of LED options—from single-colour white to full RGBW colour change—all paired with compatible lighting controls for effortless management of your environment.

Backlit Ceiling: Frequently Asked Questions
What is a backlit stretch ceiling?
A tensioned translucent membrane fitted over LED lighting, creating an evenly lit ceiling surface with no visible fixtures. Imperial's version, StretchLume, is engineered specifically for this LED layout, membrane spec, and fixing profile are optimised together rather than just diffusing light through a basic panel.
Does it create hotspots or shadows?
No, the system is designed for uniform, shadow-free illumination across the whole surface, whether it's a 2m² display niche or a 50m² lobby ceiling.
How long do the LEDs last, and is there a warranty?
Imperial uses high-quality 24V LEDs and power supplies covered by a 5-year guarantee. Maintenance requirements are minimal once installed.
Can we get access above the stretch ceiling once it has been installed?
Yes! The stretch ceiling can be unclipped to give access above and then reinstalled using specialist tools once the works above are complete.
Can stretch ceilings be repaired?
It depends on the location of any damage within the ceiling panel. If it is near to the edge, the ceiling can often be re-harpooned and re-stretched; if not, a replacement will be required.
Can I have downlights and speakers within my stretch ceiling?
Absolutely! We can create apertures in stretch ceilings to allow for downlights, speakers, grills, smoke heads, etc. They just need to be self-supported. Pretty much anything that you can have in a plasterboard ceiling, you can also have in a stretch ceiling.
Are stretch ceilings fire resistant?
Yes, StretchLume is fire-rated, making it suitable for commercial, retail, and architectural spaces.
What installation methods are available?
Three: flush-mounted (within a plasterboard opening, for a minimalist flush finish), surface-mounted (best for limited-depth or exposed slab situations), and suspended/floating (creates architectural "light raft" zones in open-plan spaces).
How much does it cost to install a stretch ceiling?
There are several factors that impact the cost of stretch ceiling installation including size, complexity of design, different shapes, required cut-outs, and especially if lighting is involved. It’s always best to contact us for a free estimate.
Can lighting colour or brightness be controlled?
Yes, LED options range from single-colour white through to full RGBW colour-change, paired with compatible lighting controls.
What kinds of spaces is it used in?
It's popular in hospitality and leisure (spas, hotel lobbies, restaurants), retail and brand spaces, healthcare and wellness settings where adjustable white light helps create a calming feel, commercial offices, and it's a particular favourite for car showrooms and photo studios.
Can architects get the technical specs?
Yes, Imperial provides an Architect Pack with technical drawings and LED layout guidance, plus a product data sheet.
Is it a full supply and install service?
Yes, Imperial handles the whole thing themselves, from the LED layout design right through to fitting and tensioning the membrane on site.
